Hands on Activity: Nuts and Bolts Chess Set Instructions Nuts and Bolts Chess Set Instructions Designed by Michelle Evans and Dr. Teresa Parr
Here are printable instructions for a chess set made out of nuts and bolts. This was a very popular activity at our chess camp this year. You can either use silver and black nuts and bolts to distinguish between white and black or paint the sets. If you paint the sets, here are some tips: use primer, double coat the sets, and use a clear coat on top. Kids love, love the metallic paints. Keep in mind that painting the pieces is not kid friendly. Paint designed to be durable on metal is not suitable for children to use. If you use black and silver nuts and bolts, you can send them home in useable condition, giving parents the option to paint them. You can make a nice chess bag by buying a chess board stencil from a craft store and using fabric paint. Algebraic notation can be added by using a fabric pen. Folding the chess pieces up in a cloth will help keep the paint from chipping.
